What is Learn to Homebrew Day?

In 1999, the American Homebrewers Association (AHA) established Teach a Friend to Homebrew Day as an international event to introduce people to the homebrewing hobby and to help establish relationships with local homebrew supply shops (see Find a Supply Shop).

In 2009, the name was changed from Teach a Friend to Homebrew Day to Learn to Homebrew Day to better reflect the nature of the event.

Learn to Homebrew Day occurs each year on the first Saturday in November, when homebrewers around the world are encouraged to invite friends and family who have not yet been initiated into the homebrewer ranks to celebrate Learn to Homebrew Day and brew a batch of beer together.

Free Hops!

Come by at 1pm on Sunday to pick up some free cone hops! These hops come to us from Dakota Hops in Spearfish, S.D. They are currently funded by grants from the S.D. Department of Agriculture through the Specialty Crop Grant Program. The goal of Dakota Hops is to demonstrate that hops can be grown in South Dakota and provide brewers with quality, fresh hop varieties tailored to their brewing requirements and to provide knowledge and resources for increased production and processing of hops in our region.

There are 4 varieties to choose from. The hops are free to take as long as you can provide feedback about the usage of these hops in your brewing ventures. Feedback can be emailed later to mphilleo@gmail.com.

Oktoberfest Brew!

As we gear up for this years Oktoberfest, we thought we should kick off with a group brew. We'll be brewing a batch of Oktoberfest this Saturday, June 12th. The brewing will begin at 1 pm at 142 Dolan Drive, Lincoln.

We will be creating this Masher Brew Recipe on site as a group (granted we have all the necessary ingredients). So if you have any recipe ideas or something you'd like to contribute please bring them to the brewing or post recipe suggestions on the forum.

We do already have the yeast for this brew. Thanks goes out to Jeff and his awesome supplies!

This year's Hopluck will be held at General Sibley Park, just 3 miles south of the Bismarck Expressway on Washington St. The park includes camping sites for tents and campers with electrical hook-ups. There are also playgrounds, 24-hole disc golf course, a sand volleyball court, horseshoes, and a boat ramp. So feel free to boat, camp, or bring games. We've got the shelter all day. The Mashers will be presenting their very own keg of specially brewed Hopluck IPA (to be brewed on May 1st, BIG Brew Day). But don't let that stop you from bring and sharing some of your own homebrew.

Big Brew for National Homebrew Day

American Homebrewers Association
In 1988, May 7th was announced before Congress as National Homebrew Day. The American Homebrewers Association created Big Brew as an annual event to celebrate National Homebrew Day not only in the United States, but around the world. Big Brew is held each year on the first Saturday in May.

Homebrewing has been practiced in America since the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock. Today there are an estimated 750,000 homebrewers in the United States. Homebrewers are passionate about brewing beer and love to share that passion with others. That’s what Big Brew is all about: homebrewers getting together all over the world to share their love for the hobby.

Meeting Place Moved!

The AMVETS has been great to us, but we need a more stable place to meet... A place where we can be ourselves... A place where we can buy brew supplies!

After a vote at our April 6th meeting, Muddy River Mashers Members decided to move meeting locations. Jeff Kohler, of Wheels Wings-N-Hobbies, has offered up his stores location as a meeting venue for the Mashers. We would like to thank Jeff for his generosity. Beer Keg Thefts Get ND Legislature`s Attention

North Dakota beer wholesalers are having problems with stolen kegs, and the state Legislature is trying to help.

North Dakota`s House voted 91-2 on Monday to make it a crime for junk dealers and recyclers to buy beer kegs if they have brewery markings or if the markings have been removed.

Minot Rep. Woody Thorpe says beer kegs are made of stainless steel and cost about $145 each. He says thieves can get $35 to $45 for them at salvage yards.

The bill makes it a misdemeanor to illegally sell a beer keg. The penalty is up to 30 days in jail and a fine of up to $1,000. It doesn`t apply to breweries or wholesalers that are trying to get rid of their own kegs.

The bill is HB1365.

Kid Rock Beer?

Michigan Brewing Company to craft a Kid Rock beer

Some of our loyal KalmaBrew readers may recall how much it tickled our funnybones when we discovered that bad-boy musician Kid Rock had partnered with a beverage distributor to create his own brand of beer.

Well, the "cowboy" is doing his home state proud. Today we just learned that Michigan Brewing Co. of Webberville will be partnering with Mr. Rock in creating this exciting product.

According to an article published today by the Associated Press, Michigan Brewing Co. will receive a tax break from the state to produce this 'bad-ass' beer.

The article states, "The Michigan Brewing Co. plans to invest $7 million in the new product line, which it said will add jobs. On Tuesday, the Michigan Economic Growth Authority approved a nearly $723,00 tax credit over seven years for the company. The village of Webberville also is considering a tax abatement."

Readers, imagine our excitement at this news. We are so pleased that the Kid's beer will be produced by one of Michigan's own craft breweries. This is also the perfect time to reinvigorate our call for label designs for Kid Rock's beer.

Beer Sales Go Flat in Worldwide Economic Slump

MILWAUKEE — Even the brewing industry is starting to go flat in the worldwide economic slump.

SABMiller PLC, the London-based brewer of Grolsch, Miller Genuine Draft and Peroni Nastro Azzurro lagers, said on Thursday its beer shipments fell unexpectedly in the third quarter as consumers pulled back on their demand.

Carlsberg A/S, the Copenhagen-based maker of Carlsberg beer, said it was cutting 274 jobs to save on costs due to a future "where we face more uncertainties and risks," the company said in a statement.

Beer usually holds up better than other categories during tough economic times, said Benj Steinman, editor of trade publication Beer Marketer's Insights, and that trend had been holding true during this recession for some segments of the industry. But the latest figures show the market is trending downward, perhaps accelerating as global economies continue to sputter, and relief seems uncertain.

Beer is "recession-resistant, not recession-proof," Steinman said.

SABMiller said lager volumes fell 1 percent in the three-month period that ended Dec. 31, compared with the same period a year earlier, because of the economy.

"Consumer demand has been affected by the current global economic slowdown, and has continued to weaken in many of the group's markets," the company said in releasing its quarterly trading update, which does not provide financials.

The company said, however, that its financial performance remained in line with expectations "notwithstanding the relative strength of the U.S. dollar against the group's major currencies."

The rise in the U.S. dollar also has hurt businesses with overseas interests.

SABMiller is the world's second-largest brewer by volume after losing the top spot to Anheuser-Busch Inbev NV after InBev's $52 billion acquisition of Anheuser-Busch last year. In November, SABMiller said it was scaling back investment in the face of continued cost pressures and slowing demand for beer worldwide.

With the latest numbers, it appears demand has been hit hardest in the U.S. and Europe.

In the U.S., SABMiller and rival Molson Coors Brewing Co. saved costs last summer with a domestic joint venture called MillerCoors.

But MillerCoors sales are falling too. Domestic sales to retailers fell 2.3 percent over the third quarter, with flagship Miller Lite's sales falling 7.5 percent. Coors Light continued its momentum, posting a 1 percent sales increase, according to the company. But that was slower than in previous quarters, Steinman noted.

He said the Miller Lite number should be cause for concern about the brand. The fact that Coors Light's 1 percent growth was slower than in previous quarters could signal that the overall beer market is getting weaker, he said.

The U.S. beer market typically grows about 1 percent a year, over a ten-year average. In the past few years it had been growing ahead of that. But in 2008 sales rose about half a percentage point, he said.

MillerCoors said its premium light brand volumes were down 2.4 percent, with particular softness in restaurants and bars, where consumers are cutting back as they try to stretch their budgets. But MGD 64, a 64-calorie version of Miller Genuine Draft, kept growing after its launch last year, SABMiller said, and craft and imports rose 1.6 percent, led by a double-digit performance from Blue Moon.

In Europe, where consumers are also hurting, lager volume fell 1 percent, including a 22 percent drop in Russia. But MillerCoors volume grew 2 percent in Poland, where the company gained market share. In Romania, the volume growth rate slowed to 11 percent, while the Czech Republic's domestic volumes dropped 1 percent.

SABMiller also said volume in developing countries, which produce around 80 percent of its profits, is slowing as the credit crunch deepens.

Third-quarter shipments rose 2 percent in Latin America, stymied by a 6 percent decline in Colombia, the company's biggest market in the region. In Africa and Asia, organic lager volumes increased 2 percent, with growth in China flat.

Carlsberg, citing an uncertain future, said in its news release Thursday that it was accelerating its restructuring plan to improve on efficiencies. In Denmark, the company said it was starting Thursday to negotiate with unions to cut 150 jobs.

Carlsberg Baltic started restructuring its business in late 2008 and will now accelerate that by cutting 124 jobs, in addition to the 80 layoffs announced in November.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) North Dakota law allows limited sales of locally produced beer and wine. A Minot legislator wants to give the same rights to people who want to make hard liquor.

Rep. Dan Ruby's proposal establishes a new "farm distillery" license for North Dakotans who want to make whiskey, vodka or any other grain-based spirit.

The license holder would need to use a majority of North Dakota farm products to make and sell the liquor. He or she would not need to be based on a farm.

Ruby's proposed law allows the liquor maker to give away free samples, host tasting events and ship up to 25,000 gallons annually to any person who is legally allowed to buy the beverages.

He says the liquor maker would have to go through a wholesaler to sell any products in a retail liquor store.

The bill is HB1249.
